Treatments

Milestones Pediatric Dentistry provides general pediatric dental services. Please click on Our Services tab for more details.

We will conduct a thorough examination of your child’s oral health at the first visit to determine the best course of action to achieve optimal dental health and meet your goals. We will:

  • Take dental x-rays to identify any current problems and to use as a baseline on future visits to detect early signs of problems.
  • Assess gum condition and health.
  • Examine teeth for cavities and condition of old dental restorations.
  • Clean and polish your child’s teeth.
  • Discuss all preventative oral hygiene and dietary recommendations.
  • Discuss the next steps for achieving and maintaining a healthy and functional dentition for your child.

Many health conditions can affect oral health, so your child's medical information is very important in diagnosing issues with their teeth, gums, and mouth.

Dental x-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools. Many oral conditions occur between teeth or under the gums or bones, are undetectable by the human eye, and may have no early signs or symptoms. Left untreated, these conditions can create serious dental and general health problems, including pain, swelling, and loss of teeth. Early detection with x-rays is critical to making treatment decisions that can minimize pain, fear, and lower the overall cost of treatment.

Sedation

Many dental procedures can be completed under local anesthesia. However, to help more anxious patients relax, or for more complex procedures, inhalation sedation, oral sedation (including nitrous oxide) and IV sedation are available.

Known as nitrous oxide or “laughing gas,” your child will experience a feeling of euphoria after just 2-3 minutes of breathing in the gas. Your child will be aware of their surroundings and be able to respond to questions. Nitrous oxide inhalation has very few side effects, such as nausea and is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes after the gas is turned off and your child is placed on 100% oxygen.

Oral medication allows your child to be conscious and feel more relaxed before and during a dental procedure. We provide your child with medication in the office, to be taken the morning of their appointment.

These drugs are administered in the office by a board-certified dental or medical anesthesiologist that allows your child to sleep through a procedure. Children often have little or no memory of the treatment.

Children

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should begin cleaning your child’s gums with a soft wet cloth soon after birth. As soon as the first tooth appears, start brushing twice daily with a soft infant toothbrush and just a smear of toothpaste. When you come in for your child’s first visit, we’ll show you how to brush properly and which types of toothpastes we recommend for your child.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth appears, or by the child’s first birthday at the latest. We can look for potential problems and help your child start to become comfortable in the dental setting and get to know us as their friend. These early visits can make your child’s experience with a dentist a positive one.

Please note that patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all visits. We want to meet with both of you to discuss findings and treatments, and to address your questions and concerns.
