Is Your Child Experiencing a Dental Emergency?

If your child experiences a life-threatening dental or medical emergency, please call 911.

Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe bleeding from the mouth
  • Signs of an oral infection
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A tooth that has been pushed out of position
  • A loose, chipped, or broken tooth
  • A severe toothache

What are the Most Common Dental Emergencies?

The following are the most common dental emergencies we treat at Milestones Pediatric Dentistry and some recommendations on what you can do:

Bleeding From the Mouth: Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If, however, the bleeding is heavy and you can't control it, head to your nearest emergency room or call 911.

Signs of Oral Infection:  If your child develops swelling in the gums or around a tooth, he or she may need antibiotics. If your child develops facial swelling around the cheeks, jaws, neck, or eye, head to your nearest emergency room or call 911.

Loose or knocked-out teeth: In the case of a loose tooth, have your child bite down gently on a towel to keep it in place. When it comes to a knocked-out BABY tooth, we DO NOT recommend reimplanting it. If, however, your child knocks out a permanent tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it gently with water, and try to return it back into the socket. If that's not possible, place it in a small container of milk or Save a Tooth to prevent it from drying out, and contact us immediately.

Tooth chips or cracks: Cracks can occur from biting down on hard objects or trauma. If your child chips or cracks a tooth, collect any pieces and bring them with you to the emergency appointment. Meanwhile, rinse your child's mouth with warm water.

Severe Toothaches: A toothache can develop due to deep decay, infection, or trauma. If the discomfort persists, contact our office for an emergency appointment. Meanwhile, have your child rinse with warm water and keep the area as clean as possible by brushing and flossing to dislodge any trapped food or debris. You can use a cold compress to help reduce the pain until Dr. Roshan sees your child.

How Can You Avoid Dental Emergencies?

The best way to avoid dental emergencies is to focus on prevention, including routine dental exams and cleanings at our Flower Mound dental office. Dr. Roshan and his team will monitor your child's oral health and identify problems in their earliest stages before they progress and require emergency care. Moreover, if your child plays contact sports, wearing a custom sports mouthguard is the best way to help prevent sports-related dental injuries.
