Fluoride Treatments

Dental cavities remain widely common among children. When detected early, dental therapies apart from traditional restorative treatment may be an option for your child. Keep reading to learn about silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and how it can arrest the progression of early tooth decay.

What Is SDF and How Does It Work?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved treatment that our office uses to arrest cavities without the need for injections or drilling. SDF is safe for use in children and contains no mercury. We reserve this treatment for primary teeth only.

What Are the Benefits of SDF?

This unique therapy is a simple, cost-effective, painless, and fast application treatment. It requires two applications on two separate appointments. SDF is highly effective at arresting decay and helps relieve tooth sensitivity.

It's important to note that even though SDF halts decay progression, it does not restore a tooth's function or appearance. Moreover, this treatment will cause permanent staining of the carious lesions or areas of decay. However, the ease of SDF treatment and its immediate effects make it a viable option for many of our patients.

Is Your Child a Candidate for SDF Treatment?

Not every cavity can be treated using SDF. Dr. Roshan will evaluate your child's unique needs and help you determine the best treatment option. If your child qualifies for SDF treatment, it is not a substitute for proper oral hygiene and dietary practices. We recommend daily brushing and flossing along with cutting out sugary and acidic foods and beverages to help guide your child towards treatment success.

What Is the SDF Application Process?

Applying silver diamine fluoride is a simple, non-invasive procedure. We will start by drying and isolating the decayed tooth from moisture and saliva. Next, we will use a small brush to apply the SDF solution directly onto the affected tooth surfaces. After the appropriate application time, we will wipe and rinse away any remaining solution on your child's teeth. Your child will be able to eat and drink right away.

We'll ask you to schedule a follow-up visit two to four weeks after treatment to evaluate how the SDF is working and to complete the second application. We will monitor your child's treated areas at all future cleaning and dental check-up appointments.
